Rest Day in Baile Herculane

July 4th
0km

After a day of heavy climbing, I finally had a restful rest day. The hotel did my laundry and had free wireless, so I didn't have to wander around the town for that. And the town was very small, so there was no chance of any useful stores. As a result, I spent most of the day reading, watching TV, and using the internet.

I did venture out of the hotel a few times, to eat and take a few photos. Its a very interesting town, right in the middle of a thin valley, with tall rocky mountains on each side and a river running down the middle. Its claim to fame are its mineral baths, fed by some underground spring. Apparently Alexander the Great had come to the town to enjoy the baths. It was a scorching hot day, so I didn't bother with a hot bath.

There are a number of seemingly abandoned old buildings, that are nevertheless full of character. There are also several 1960s hotels, which have much less character but give current tourists a place to stay.
We found out today that the Chinese embassy in Turkey will only issue visas to citizens of Turkey, so it looks like I can't get a visa there. Same thing with Romania, so Bucharest is out. The tour leaders are going to sit down with us tomorrow to come up with a plan. Such a pain in the butt.

Here's a shot of one of the old buildings (broken windows) and the valley wall.

This was the view from our hotel.
