I Remember

Jiayuguan to Desert Camp
October 16th
134km (766m vertical)

After weeks of headwinds and flat sand, today was a welcome reminder of cycling's joys. The wind was with us, so we cruised along effortlessly, enjoying the scenery. And we actually had scenery...not just desert. We rode through small towns with autumn trees and seas of drying corn and chili peppers in front of the houses. We rode up to massive snow-capped mountains, and then alongside them all afternoon. (I think we have to climb over them in a few days.) We even passed a military base, where half-a-dozen fighter jets were practicing their take-offs and landings..

Second last night of camping on the trip, and we have a beautiful spot beside a gorge with a panoramic view of the mountains. Almost makes me sad that we don't have more nights of camping ahead...but it is getting really cold at night, so I won't complain about a warm hotel bed.

Misty mountains and a tiny green tent...great campsite!
