Cold

Desert Camp to Dun Huang
October 9th
138km (408m vertical)

I was freezing cold in my tent last night. I had two thick layers on my legs, four layers on my top, a toque, gloves, and two pairs of socks. I had my thermal sleeping bag liner, and my useless sleeping bag both tied tightly around my head so that there was only a small hole to breath out of. Even so, I was cold. The temperature inside my tent was 44F, so my sleeping bag should have been enough – its rated down to 35F!!!

As I prepared to inflate my tires this morning, one of the valve snapped in half...probably due to the cold. Changing a tube with numb hands is not fun or easy. So far I've gone through 8 tubes with only one actual flat. (I inherited a flat tire when my bike was returned to me in France, I've now “broken” three tubes, and I've given three away to people that have run out.) I only have 3 spares left, so I hope we can find some more here in China. So far we have not found the size I need.

Great tailwind into lunch today, so we flew. The flat desert scenery is a lot nicer at 25km/h than it is at 15km/h. Nice to arrive in town before 3:30pm too.

Modern camel-train. Their humps were flopping from side to side as they trotted past.

Lots of cotton fields as we approached Dun Huang. I can't believe these huge piles of cotton didn't blow away!

Another fully loaded trailer:

I'm sure that there is an investment analogy here:
